When A House Is So Much More
It is said that home is a feeling, not a place. But for many of us, the house we grew up in…occupies sacred ground in our hearts.
When we visit a place where we used to live, these cues can cause us to revert back to the person we once were. For better or worse, the place where we grew up usually retains an iconic status! But while it’s human nature to want to have a place to belong, we also want to be special, and defining ourselves as someone who once lived somewhere more interesting!!
A great deal of scholarly work has been done that “links memory to space,” — Scott Huettel, chair of the department of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University. Researchers have studied how a physical space can be tied to memory and, consequently, be imbued with significant value beyond anything monetary.
We have memories and associations that are connected to all of those things that make houses so heavily connected to ourselves. That might make the place where you grew up, or brought your children home from the hospital, feel invaluable and hard to part with, even though it is ultimately just a physical thing with a price tag attached.
