Iral Thokku / Prawn Thokku

Also Known As: Shrimps Thokku. Prawns Thokku. Eral or Iral Thokku. Roiyalu Masala. Kekda Masala.

Ingredients:

  • Shrimps(small or medium size)
  • Onion 1 finely chopped
  • Garlic 1 whole head – peeled & chopped
  • Tomatoes 1-2 finely chopped
  • Dry Red Chilies 6-8 grated
  • Lemon juice from 1 fruit
  • Salt
  • Turmeric powder
  • Curry leaves 1 cup
  • Mustard seeds 1/2 spoon
  • Cumin seeds 1 spoon
  • Asafoetida 1/4 spoon
  • Sesame oil 1/4 cup

Method:

  1. Marinate shrimps with salt, turmeric, lemon juice & chiles. Let this stand for at least 2 hours.
  2. In a heavy bottomed iron skillet, heat oil. Add mustard and cumin seeds. Allow them to pop well.
  3. Then add asafoetida and curry leaves to this.
  4. Further add onions to this. Fry real good…maybe till it turns to reddish brown color.
  5. Then add garlic and fry real good…maybe till it is fragrant.
  6. Now add tomatoes too. Fry till oil shows up on sides.
  7. Stir-in shrimps and continue frying over medium heat for few minutes.
  8. Cover and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes.
  9. Then remove the lid and fry over high heat till oil shows up on sides.
  10. Serve warm along with roti or rice.
