Mom’s Milk Storage and Handling Guidelines

  • Colostrum — The milk expressed after delivery (first 5 days) can be stored at room temperature for approximately 12 hours.
  • Fresh  Expressed Milk — at normal room-temperature (32-36 degrees Celsius) could stay fresh for about 3-4 hours. If packed with ice/ in an insulated coolers, it could last for 20-24 hours.
  • Refrigerated Milk — (0 to 4 Celsius) could last for 3-5 days.
  • Frozen Milk — (0 to -4 Celsius) could last for two weeks
  • Deep Freezer — (-18 to -20 Celsius) could hold the milk for a whole year (however, quite ideal for about 6 months).
  • To Thaw Milk – Thaw in the refrigerator for about 12 hours. After thawing…try to use it up quickly and do not re-freeze the milk again.
  • Never shake or heat the milk.  To warm the milk, use bottle warmer.  And, instead of shaking…gently swirl the milk.
  • If baby did not finish up the milk, kindly discard it. Or try one more time…within 1-2 hours.
