Oma Podi – Cooking Up The Storm

Oma Podi – Cooking Up The Storm

Mabe Home45Hi Foodies, How is fall season treating you all there? Here, its terribly cold, sun occasionally visits us, but just not enough to keep us warm and cozy…hmmph the world looks completely grey from my end!

Well, for today… I have a fried snack to go with your hot cup of chai! A better snack to kill the time, if you ask?! Anyway, please roll up your sleeves to prepare it! I haven’t been very good at making these ethnic snacks, but somehow kept my attempts often. Honestly, bit ashamed to share my success rate on it. :(

So, on the other day…I seriously wanted to give it a try, but was in no mood for an elaborate cooking and the aftermath cleanup mess! That is why, I thought of an easy fix  ’Oma Podi! The moment the thought flickered, I was all ready with flour, oil, stuff in the kitchen!! But, to my utter dismay…I had no ‘omam‘ at home!  So, the idea was lying in the cold box for a really looooong time! And,  when the time primed for the next visit to the ethnic stores…I just rushed to aisle five for Asian spices! Yes…they had it! So, took those tymol seeds and kissed my lil luck. :) Then, you know the rest…went ahead with cooking and clicking pictures (yeah, the usual). Thus, what is supposed to be a Deepavali Patchanam is showing up, now. :)

 Ingredients

  • 1 cup bengal gram flour
  • 2 tsp hot oil
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • pinch turmeric
  • pinch cooking soda
  • 1 tsp tymol seeds
  • curry leaves
  • oil for frying

Method

Now soak the tymol seeds in warm water and grind it, then filter the same. Now, prepare a soft dough using all the ingredients, (except oil and curry leaves).

Heat the oil in a deep pan. Fill the nozzle with the dough and press through over the hot oil. Fry these till crisp. Leave them on kitchen towels and then store it up in an air tight container.
