Jack Fruit – Sweet Dumplings

Jack Fruit – Sweet Dumplings

Pala Pazha Kozhukattai:

Pala Pazha Kozhukattai, Palapazha Kozhukkattai. Inippu Kozhukattai. Sweet Dumplings. Jack Fruit – Rice Dumplings.

Botanical name of Jack fruit is Artocarpus heterophyllus. It belongs to mulberry trees family. The fruits are extra large, that one can practically hug it. Interestingly the fruits are found on the trunks and not on the branches here. Ah nature’s wonder! These fruits are usually shared with family and friends, I bet one cannot eat it alone, ha ha.

While this fruit reminds me of a Sanga kaala Tamizh Kavithai (2nd Century Tamil Poem, Agananooru(Anthologies of love and family). “Siru Kotu Perum Pazham Pola”…A girl who misses her beloved, feels so heavy as this jack fruit! The ‘large fruit’ is compared to her ‘missing feelings’ while ‘the small stalk of the fruit’ is compared to ‘her life’. So, how badly she misses him, that her life is in deep strain and it can give away any minute! Oh god, I am a terrible translator!! Anyway, one cannot enjoy the essence of poem, by explaining or translating it, right.

Coming to the point, this is a continuation recipe from my previous post! Right, now you got that ‘how my Mommy and Geetha Auntie prepared Jack Fruit Jam, alright. So, just flip the jam into rice flour and make this sweet dumplings. Aah there you are…like it, huh.

Ingredients:

Jack Fruit Jam
Rice flour (mill ground, fresh)
Nuts and Raisins (to fill in)
Grated coconut (to fill in)
Ghee few spoons.

Method:

Slightly fry the nuts and raisins in warm ghee and mix them with coconut. Set aside.

In a wide bowl, bring rice flour…add the jam to it. Mix well and bring it to smooth dough consistency.

Now smear the steaming plates with ghee. Make equal parts out of the dough, sneak in…nuts, raisins and coconut mixture. Repeat the same for all the remaining stuff.

Steam cook for about 10 minutes.

Tada…its ready, dig in.
