When it comes to grocery shopping, especially health food…I trust my instincts and am never disappointed! So, this time…I surprised myself by getting this barley pearls. I always had a special likings for those old-world grains! Oh yeah, I purely bagged it out of impulse! Hmmmmm, you see…probably, I score in negatives for my creativity, but never failed to feed a soul. If you really want to make a difference in your everyday cooking? Then, you got to try this recipe…
Ingredients
- 1 cup barley
- 1 lemon
- 1-2 dry red chilies
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- salt to taste
- a pinch of turmeric
- 2 tsp chana dal
- 2 tsp urad dal
- 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
- few curry leaves
- few tsp oil
Method
Bring 4-5 cups of water to boiling and add barley to it. Allow this to cook for at least 10-15 minutes. Once its tender enough, drain the water and set aside. Additionally you could also rinse it for a complete starch-free pearls.
Now, in a wide skillet, heat oil. Add the tempering spices and wait till they pop. Followed by chilies, ginger and onions…fry real good and add salt and turmeric to it.
Toss the barley on to it and stir-fry over medium heat until its gets well-coated with oil and spices. When you feel, its done…remove from heat. Add lemon juice finally.
There you go, you fixed yourself a healthy meal. Enjoy.
