Thakaali Saadham – Country Style

Also Known As: Thakaali Saadham. Tomato Rice. Thakkali Saadham. Tomato Bath.
- Raw rice 1 cup
- Green chilies 3, sliced
- Garlic 5 pods, minced
- Onion 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomatoes 5, crushed
- Salt
- Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
- Chili powder 1-1 1/2 tsp
- Chana dal 1 tsp
- Urad dal 1 tsp
- Asafoetida 1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves few
- Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
- Sesame oil few tsp
Method:
- Cook rice, with enough salt in it. When they are done, spread them in a wide tray and allow this to cool, to get well separated and stiff rice.
- In a wok, heat oil. Add mustard, asafoetida, chana urad and curry leaves to it. Let them crackle well.
- Now add chilies, let the crackle too.
- Followed by garlic and onion, wait till they are fragrant.
- Now add tomatoes, salt, pinch of turmeric and chili powder. Cover and cook. When the tomatoes turn pulpy and oil shows up on sides…remove from heat.
- Now stir-in rice and mix them well. Now pack this rice in a compact container to bring the flavor.
- Best travel dish! Serve warm or at room temperature.
