Dorm Room Meal Ideas

I hardly ever get tired to talk about my hostel life! I have always been away from my folks, since childhood! Looks like I lived my best years there. So, always got plenty to rant on this topic. When you think of a dorm-room living, the first thing comes popping in the mind is…yep, the food. And, yes…of course the dorm meal sucks! Do I even need to highlight that! But, certainly it was also fun to sneak out of the hostel for some outside treats, occasionally. Otherwise, we did our best to make our meal time pleasant. Most of our culinary attempts were like this: toasting breads over an iron box, heating stuff with a hair dryer, preparing cup noodles with hot-water, tossing a salad or cooking light meals over a red-hot-electric coil…you name it, we would have experimented!!! Oh yeah, that was some time, when we had our creativity at peak, hehe.
Here, I have listed some of the best dorm-meals for you to experiment:
- Bread with canned tuna.
- Bagel with peanut butter.
- Vegetable salad or cut-fruits.
- Omlette over an iron box.
- Cup noodles – prepared with hot water.
- Skim milk coffee or tea – prepared with hot water.
- Sweet Lassi – buttermilk + sugar.
- Rice with Podi – cook rice over a single electric coil, of course you may need one tiny vessel!
- Ready to eat meals – heat it with a hair-dryer(make sure its clean).
- Sandwiches – you can stuff all your favorite ingredients, everyday a new kind.
- Soaked legumes or canned legumes.
- Mung bean sprouts – my favorite during exams time.
- Raw eggs + pasteurized milk – nice post-workout drink.
- Ready made wraps with pickles – to get nice home touch.
- Lemonade – no fancy gadget required, just a disposable cup will do.
- Grilled treats – could be done over hot stone surface, however it takes time.
Note Let me tell you all this…though the above food ideas may sound weird and crazy to some of you…those were the best meals I ever had, when I was in a single room accommodation! Oh yeah, most of my room-mates share the same sentiment as well. If you haven’t got a chance to fix a meal so far…dude, feel free to try! I bet, over time…you will start to appreciate it.:)
