Nei Idly – Rethinking First Food!!!

Nei Idly – Rethinking First Food!!!

Nei Idly – Baby’s First Meal

An emotional eating habit is vanishing away in today’s fast food culture!!! What brings an enjoyment in eating a meal? Why are we attached sentimentally to certain mythological foods? Knowing some basics of food (like what it is made of, where do we find them, how hard it is to produce/procure) and putting a bit of thought in the hardship’ to earn a meal…are all kind of awareness’ that we need to teach ourselves. Being aware of our own meals will never drive us to over eat or waste the food.

The “super-size” foods are really haunting me, in today’s mechanical life. Many are happy to see an over sized meals on their cart for just few bucks…clearly it isn’t leading us anywhere! To get that satiated feeling one’ doesn’t require a ‘Super-Size’ burger or pizza!! Well…eating food is an essential task of our lives, just bring a mindful awareness and an art of appreciation. Well, slow down a little the next time, when you practice ‘emotional eating habit’, eat in smaller portions with a great sense of appreciation of food.:)

That’s a happy HAPPY MEAL….. Loved the pics u posted…they look tempting…. I don’t exactly remember mine….. I think it used to be BAJIL (Avalakki Upkari, beaten rice), a simple one…. But for my hubby, he loved roti with hot milk, sugar & banana….. He says he relished it with all happiness & content….. I did taste it recently, it tastes really yum….

I am a slow eater….. I always relish every bite of my meal… be it whatever I ate…. My Maa in-law was kinda impressed with me & took great pleasure in feeding me too….. And hence for those nine months I was with her…she fed me to an extent that I did not realize I was putting on weight…. from 47 , I became 55… ;-)

KUDOS TO YOUR IDEAS OF NEW & INNOVATIVE DISCOVERIES OF PAST….

hey, antha kuzhipottu nei oothana padam soooper :-)

the first thing i remember about food is sitting on the kitchen top next to amma rolling out chappathis or pooris. she used to give me a bit of the dough which i would shape into tiny people, or birds, or flowers (as i knew then) and amma would roll it out and cook it for me to eat :-)

  17. How do you do this everytime ???? your posts are always very nostalgic… my first happy meal was sheera with loads of ghee :)

  19. K says:

Hey Malar, your post got me thinking and i remember me, my bro and friends as children playing adige-mane aata (kitchen game) where we used to cook (with a fake stove ofcourse!) using small utensils and mix and eat something. Those were the best days i guess:)

  20. Well, slow down a little the next time, when you practice ‘emotional eating habit’, eat in smaller portions with a great sense of appreciation of food.:)

    ok, ok, sareenga akka, hihihihihihh

nei/idli/sakkara combination was one of my favourites too and still is….

but also paal sore and oorkaa.. I used to be a fussy eater, so whenever I ask, there was this paal sore (boiled milk + salt+ rice) with a pickle which was the ideal one to make me eat something ,hihihih

Now, it’ all the contary, my family would do anything to make me stop eating, hhhaahaahha

  41. Pritya says:

Hi Malar, Along with this changing world – people, food and taste are all undergoing a paradigm shift. In today’s fast paced life where cooking is changing from elaborate to instant methods, fast food restaurants are gaining momentum and our grandmas’ recipes are getting lost in the background. There is also such a noise about not eating fat, oil, salt and spices! But if we are truly becomign health conscious, then would we not rethink in a holistic manner and stop reaching out to instant, frozen foods!
It was lovely to see your write up as it revived my childhood memories! Mom says my favourite was revisited me where I would be in my mother’s arms and she would carry me showing me the crow to divert my attention from the fuss for the food and in turn very cunningly I would stop crying and she would feed me my favorite rice and cooked thick Dal with ghee. Nothing will ever replace it, the flavor still lingers in my mouth…your Nei idly looks so attractive with the dollop of ghee. Feels good to remember my first meal!
